Here is a male king bird-of-paradise displaying his feathers to a female.

Today I want to write about one of the most stunning and beautiful birds in the world, the king bird-of-paradise.

Here are five interesting facts about them:

  1. These beautiful birds grow to only 16 cm long, making them the smallest bird-of-paradise in the world.
  2. The male king bird-of-paradise has bright red and white feathers, bright blue feet and long green plumes that have small discs on the end.  The female is a very dull brown.
  3. They mainly eat fruit and insects.
  4. At breeding time, the males put on a spectacular show that can last for hours, dancing and posing for females.  The females then build the nest and look after the young by themselves.
  5. King birds-of-paradise are one of the most common species of bird-of-paradise and can be found in lowland forests all around the island of New Guinea.
