Here is a king baboon spider chilling on a rock

Today I want to write about a very creepy big spider, the king baboon spider.

Here are five interesting facts about them:

  1. These large members of the tarantula family grow up to 20 cm long.  The females are larger than the males.
  2. King baboon spiders live in burrows in the ground with silk at the entrance to detect the vibrations of passing prey.  They hide in their burrows during the day and hunt at night.
  3. They ambush and kill beetles, cockroaches, spiders and even mice, lizards, small snakes and birds, using their powerful fangs to deliver a nasty bite.
  4. At breeding time, the female lays 30-180 eggs.  Like many other spiders, she often eats the males soon after mating.
  5. King baboon spiders are quite common and can be found in the grasslands of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

I hope that you found these facts interesting and learned something new.

Are there any other interesting facts that you would like to share about king baboon spiders?
