5 Interesting Facts About Black Howler Monkeys

Black Howler Monkey

This is a female and male black howler monkey howling together.

Today I want to write about a noisy animal that you can hear from miles away, the black howler monkey.

Here are five interesting facts about them:

  1. These large monkeys grow up to 60 cm tall, with a tail that is just as long.  Males are larger than females.
  2. They are best known for their very loud territorial calls which can be heard over two miles away.
  3. Black howler monkeys eat flowers, fruit and leaves, using their prehensile tail to move from tree to tree to find food.  They rarely come to the ground to drink, but get water by wiping wet leaves with their hands and then licking their hands.
  4. They live in small troops of about 8-10 animals.  Only the males are black, females and young monkeys have white-yellowish fur.
  5. Black howler monkeys are found in the forests of northern Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil.

I hope that you found these facts interesting and learned something new.

Are there any other interesting facts that you would like to share about black howler monkeys?
