5 Interesting Facts About Golden Lanceheads

Golden LanceheadToday I want to write about one of the rarest snakes in the world, the golden lancehead.

Here are five interesting facts about them:

  1. These beautiful looking snakes are a member of the pitviper family and grow up to 110 cm long.
  2. Golden lanceheads mainly eat birds due to the lack of small mammals where they live.  They hold on tightly when they bite so that they don’t fly away and their powerful venom kills their prey very quickly.
  3. They are excellent climbers, enabling them to get to birds in trees.
  4. At breeding time, they give birth to 2-10 live young.  The babies are about 23 cm long at birth.  Due to interbreeding, some of them are born with both male and female parts and are unable to breed.
  5. Golden lanceheads are only found on the island of Queimada Grande, off the coast of Brazil.  The island is only about 43 hectares, which makes these guys critically endangered.

I hope that you found these facts interesting and learned something new.

Are there any other interesting facts that you would like to share about golden lanceheads?
